Syfte:
To develop and carry through a research program focussing on changing trade union strategies in Turkey, South Africa and Sweden, as they face irregular ("undocumented") migration and increasing precarity of labour connected with restructuring and informalisation of economies and labour markets. The project is premised on a view of migration as an increasingly important global phenomenon, but structured by particular regional economic asymmetries and migration sub-systems: processes that place post-apartheid South Africa as an attractive economy and migration hub in the Southern African region; Turkey on the one hand towards the states of former Eastern block and on the other as a stop for migrants and refugees from the south often with plans for continuing their migration; and, Sweden as a highly regulated welfare state and high immigration hub at the Northern post of European Union, close to the Baltic states and Poland, new member states of the European Union. The methodological design of the research programmes is composed of two major phases. The first phase, the planning of the research programme and for which we are here applying for funding, is concerned with developing an integrated research proposal concerning a comparative programme of migrations hubs, informalisation and workers organisation. The second phase of the methodological design, we envision, is an integrated and well coordinated comparative approach composed of a number of field study based projects.
